Independent Study

As much as I joke about my lack of kitchen skills, I rarely make a truly inedible meal. There was the time I forgot to put noodles in a lasagna, and my recipe for “barf tuna” is legendary, but most of the time my cooking doesn’t repulse. That said, a giant pot of putrefaction has recently taken up residence in the garbage can under my kitchen sink. Every meal is an opportunity for learning (and, as it turns out, grease fires). Here’s what I learned today: If a recipe doesn’t specifically call for soy sauce, there’s probably no reason to include it. Silken tofu and firm tofu are not interchangeable. Corn starch isn’t as harmless as it looks. (On the plus side, I now know how to make glue.) Domesticated animals exiting the kitchen while you’re cooking is the international sign for “Please find a takeout menu.” Rice noodles ≠ spaghetti If you think it might be a mistake, it is probably a mistake. And my final lesson of the evening: A cast iron pan is no match for a bad cook with unshakeable optimism.

I’ve recently been in touch with a professional cartoonist to get a little information about publishing my work on cartoonstock.com. One thing which stood out was his suggestion that I try using fewer words in my panels. In the past, the dialog I used was pretty much word-for-word conversations between Mr. Weenie and myself. As an exercise, I’m going back to a few of my cartoons and editing them down to their essence—hopefully without losing their original content and tone. Who knows? Maybe someday I’ll apply to a syndicate… but that’s a LONG way off. In the meantime, I’d love some feedback—either here or on Facebook—about what you think of my edits. Thanks for taking the time to visit my website. Your support keeps me going! UPDATED EDIT: BEFORE: AFTER:

Working Vacation

Back in August, I began posting cartoons I drew for Simon Salt’s latest book, Out of Office: How to Work from Home, Telecommute, or Workshift Successfully. I got a little sidetracked with my day job and more recently, with producing BlogathonATX, but I’m back now and will be posting more illustrations from the book. Today’s cartoon is from Chapter 5: Working on the Road. While it isn’t always ideal to work when you’re away from home, conference calls from Costa Rica are a lot more fun than conference calls from the office. Trust me.
